I admit it, I scheduled my evening around the ten minute preview of Dawn of the Dead that was broadcast tonight. It's sad, I know.

So, what did I think? I think I'm definitely going to be there opening weekend (probably not opening night since I have that crowd problem and I can only stand to be in crowded lines for special occasions like this coming June's HP3).

While I enjoy the original DotD - Who doesn't relish the thought of living in a shopping mall - it never really Scared me. Ten minutes of the re-imaged DotD caused that nervous feeling in the pit of my stomach that means "I'll laugh it off now, but don't think I won't be locking the car doors on the way home and making for dang sure the front door is locked before bed tonight."

Of course, the whole reason I watch movies like this is for that nervous feeling.

So what's the big difference between the original and the re-imaging? The original focused on a band of four, with isolated incidents leading up to the band's formation. Little slices of carnage which seemed to make the story closed in. Yes, there was talk of the rest of the world, of rescue stations and random mobs... but there was no interaction.

The new version has the heroine - whom I will call Blondie since I didn't catch her name - catching random hints that something odd is going on but these are things she'll worry about tomorrow when she wakes up and starts another shift at the hospital. The world goes to crap overnight and instead of being hustled into closed scenarios that lead to The Mall, she stumbles into chaos. People and the Frisky Undead running unchecked through the streets. Paranoids brandishing guns, unsure of who to trust. Human nature at its worst as people fight to survive at all costs.

That's what scares me almost as much as the zombies... human nature. That odd noise in the kitchen? Recently deceased with the munchies or crazed neighbor wanting to create a tasty diversion.

I don't know if the rest of the movie is going to live up to the first ten minutes, but I'm going to find out at the earliest opportunity because what I did see managed to scare me.

Yeah! Zombies!

The nurse's name is Ana, according to the IMDb.

Fast-moving zombies, ambulances running down paranoids, zombiefied husband veering off to crunch on the robe-wearing neighbor in the background. Good stuff!
