Way back in September(ish? I don't remember anymore), I signed up to offer a prize for the Exchange Bingo in order to earn some cards so that I could eventually get my hands on a Molly Weasley jumper. Which, technically, I did not actually win. However,
devsgma is the most awesomest friend/writing buddy ever and she did win the jumper.
For me.
Because she is awesome, and also because she got a bingo way before I did and she knew I desperately wanted to get my hands on that jumper.
And I'm distracted again.
Anyway, in exchange for five bingo cards (which did not win me a Molly Weasley jumper, but did win me a Beware of Boggart garden stake sign that will go in front of the bushes under my front windows), I offered a story written especially for the winner.
I'm sure you can imagine my surprise when someone actually chose my prize, especially since I'm pretty sure no one had claimed the Tim Tams yet.
The winner contacted me, and we had a brief discussion about things she would like to see in a story and things she would not like, and she offered a prompt from the last exchange that she had been particularly attached to, and I thought about it for a bit and realized that with a bit of research I could totally (probably) do that. She did offer a back-up, which I know I can do, so I do have a fall back if the worst happens.
So, in preparation for being on the road and mostly internetless for about a week and a half this holiday season, I have beencopying things from Wikipedia doing some research about Australia, because I have not been there personally and as much as I enjoyed watching Crocodile Dundee and Howling III: The Marsupials back in the mid-eighties, I am pretty sure I shouldn't consider either a completely factual source of information. Did you know there were three Crocodile Dundee movies? I did not know that until just now. I only remember the first two. Thank you, IMDB, for yet another bit of useless information.
Of course, one thing lead to another and now I've got 34 pages worth of "research" on Australia, Tasmania, wildlife, plants, small towns, climate, language, food... the list goes on. Want to bet maybe three bits of all that get used?
So, at some point between now and the end of April (I think it's the end of April, it might be the beginning of April) I have a brand new - Australian based - fic to write. And it will be awesome. And while I can guarantee there will not be a cameo by Mike Dundee, I can not say the same for any of the characters from the really, really bad Howling sequel. Although, I shouldn't, because I am probably the only person on the entire planet who actually owns that movie on DVD.
What? It was awesome. Awesomely bad. Werewolves with tummy pouches and also a Russian(?) Prima Ballerina and some nun who were all werewolves. That's right, werewolves in tutus and nun's habits, running around Australia (or possibly Tasmania).
Anyway, between the mostly not going to happen internet connections and the new and current WIPs to work on, and also lots of Christmas parties where it is considered rude to bury yourself in a corner typing away on a laptop, I'll probably be MIA for the last half of the month or longer.
Having said that, expect constant updates on every little thing I do between now and January, because that's how these things always work out.
