Was up all night working on my over-due exchange fic, headphones on to keep my bass driven writing music from waking up the husband, and the dog starts barking at two thirty in the morning.

He'd done this around two, and I'd put on some shoes and shlepped him outside to take a wee then, so I figured he was just being obnoxious, but I didn't want him to wake up Captain.

So I put on the shoes again and shuffle into the living room all grumbly about the damn dog and what do I see out my living room window?

Flames.

Huge, bright flames across the street. Huge, bright flames that appeared to be eating the neighbor's SUV.

Of course, I freak the hell out because FIRE and run back down the hall all "Wake up! The neighbor's house is on fire! Or maybe the yard! Somethings on fire! Flames!"

I think to myself that someone should probably call the fire department but I'm not sure if that would be a 911 thing or if I'd need to call a different number and if it's a different number, where would I find it, and in the thirty seconds it takes me to attempt to puzzle this out, the Captain has whiped out his cell and is already telling someone that there is a fire across the street and please send help.

Keep in mind, the local fire department is like five or ten blocks down the road from us.

Captain looks out the window, decides the house isn't really on fire, and as a cop pulls up he tells me he's going back to sleep.

I'm all "But fire?!" and he's all "Four thirty wake up alarm" and then I sat in a dark living room, peeking out the mini-blinds at the fire truck and the neighbors for half an hour, even though the fire was practically out by the time the fire truck arrived. Just in case.

In other - less exciting - news, I will finish this fic if it kills me, but first, I need sleep.
