Since I posted last:
1) We picked up the key to the new house and did the solo walk-through to list ALL the things that seemed dodgy and the ones that needed fixed. Captain was supposed to have the afternoon off so that we could run the first month's rent and list over to the realtor and then do some shopping for things we needed like light bulbs and wooden dowels for windows. Yes, I'm paranoid, and while a dowel won't stop a brick, it will make it difficult for a thief to jimmy the window open silently. Instead, Captain was called back into work after a few hours and had to leave me at the new house until nearly seven pm. With no chairs, food (I hadn't eaten yet that day) or anything to drink.
2) The new house has some issues. In the last week we have had the furnace worked on twice so we had no heat for several days, one of the burners in the furnace replaced first and then a second visit to have it adjusted because the pilot light keeps going out. It's still going out, so there will need to be a third visit in the near future. The AC did not work, a fuse was replaced there, but they can not see if it needs freon until it gets a bit warmer. Out of three sinks, only one was usable due to major leaks. The front outside hose faucet had no knob and had been stripped bare. Out of three ceiling fans with lights, only one worked properly. The emergency vent for the water heater isn't actually attached to the tubing that leads to the outside, so if there is a need to vent water, it will leak directly on the new laundry room flooring. The brand new flooring in the kitchen is already warping due to the former leak in the kitchen sink (which was fixed by the chattiest plumber EVER yesterday). The brand new to us refurbished dishwasher that was installed on the first does not work, which we didn't realize until the kitchen sink leak was fixed because I didn't want the dishwasher to leak everywhere too. The dishwasher/stove delivery guy was over four hours late delivering the appliances and didn't show up until Captain was called back in on the first, which meant I was stuck in the house with a very creepy potential rapist for a few hours. Also, he scratched up the brand new flooring. The painters had been smoking in our None Smoking house, and had left cigarette butts and ashes in both bathrooms and the kitchen, and had tried to cover up the smell with a room deodorizer in the kitchen. Two electrical sockets were damaged and needed replaced (done today, along with the two broken ceiling fans), and the vent in the guest bathroom is still broken. The hall has one of those dual light switch things so you can turn it off at either end of the hall, but it wouldn't come back on again unless you turned it on from the same switch you'd turned it off at. That was also fixed today. The eight foot long closet rod in the master bedroom is snapped in half and can not hold up any weight, and will need to be replaced. The outside doors leading to the crawl space are damaged and need to be dealt with or we will have vermin under the house. There were no house numbers anywhere on the property, so I had to purchase numbers for the mailbox. AND the bathrooms and kitchen cabinets all have water damage and will need to be wiped down with vinegar to kill any potential mold/mildew, and then I will have to remove any more moisture and find a way to eradicate the remaining smell because OMG it stinks. AND AND spider egg sacks were ALL over the kitchen, and wasp nests outside. Captain removed all the egg sacks we could find and sprayed the wasps and put out poison for the ants we don't want to bother the dog.
Other than that, it's not a bad house.
3) On Saturday it did not rain. Which is good because we rented a U-Haul and attempted to move just about everything we owned except for the kitchen stuff (minus the fridge). We knew our gamer friend Andrew had foolishly volunteered to help lift things, but between volunteering at Siege of Augusta the weekend before and packing, my back and legs were pretty much shot so I was afraid it was just going to be Captain and Andrew. However, it turns out that being nice and friendly to people actually pays off once in awhile (Who knew?) and the guy who owns the local game store we frequent and several people we've met through board gaming showed up to help. So, between the U-Haul and all the personal vehicles, they managed to clear everything I'd packed plus a few armfuls of other stuff out of the old house in only two trips. The new house is currently a disaster zone, but that's to be expected.
4) I have spent the last several days slowly unpacking-alone, as always. I can't move furniture on my own (see back/leg issues above) so I can only work on so many things until I need Captain to do his bit and free up some room for me to unpack some more things. Tonight's agenda is FINALLY getting all the big pieces of furniture in place so I can sort out the remaining boxes into the rooms they belong in, which should make unpacking much easier. Our master closet is full of nearly two dozen garbage bags full of clothes, just waiting for me to get around to folding them all and putting the ones that aren't meant to be hung away.
5) Lots of shopping for things for the new house. De-stinkafying things, light bulbs, wooden dowels, welcome mats, shower curtains that are masquerading as real curtains because I'm cheap and also I have a dog and some cats, new bedding because I want it, etc.
6) The bathrooms are unpacked, but I can not put things under the sinks until Captain has had a chance to line the shelves/floor of the cabinet. This is his job because it is gross and also there is wood involved and I do not do gross and wood or gross wood. I have limits.
The master bedroom is unpacked except for clothing. We don't have all the new bedding yet, so we're still using the old stuff, but our new comforter is in a bag on the floor and I keep looking at it longingly.
7) We've popped over to the old house to pack up kitchen things, and are down to just about one car load of stuff left - dishes, glasses and vases mainly. We're planning to clean this weekend - so much fur and dust everywhere! I'm waiting to hear back from the carpet cleaner guy to schedule an appointment for next week, and once the place is clean and the carpets are done, we can turn in our key and be done with the old house. YAY for security deposits!
8) Also, we did our taxes at some point, I can't remember if I mentioned that or not. So YAY for tax returns at some point.
And finally, today was another doctor's visit with New!Doctor Asshat. Although he wasn't an Asshat. It was like we got his good twin, or perhaps his meds finally kicked in, because he was smiley and polite and not at all condescending. It totally threw me off. Anyway, we asked for a referral to an endo, found out I've lost eleven pounds since the last appointment (go me) and my blood sugar and cholesterol are both under control. Again, I am awesome. And I take full credit for all of that and refuse to even consider that New!Doctor and the meds he gave me might have something to do with any of it, because I don't like him.
So, that's my last week or so.
