There is an older gentleman on one of the Facebook groups I belong to - one for the very small, very religious, very old-fashioned Mid-West town I grew up in. This man is... an ass.

He currently lives outside the US, but continuously feels the need to ridicule the people in my hometown no matter what they post about. Post a picture of the old Post Office on Main St and he starts ranting about how everyone in town is a sell-out and small businesses like his former one all go out of business because people insist on driving to The City instead of purchasing things in town. Dude, I lived there for eighteen years. There was nothing in town to purchase, unless you needed to feed a horse or fix your tractor.

Things are different now, The City has begun to swallow the town up, but I'm pretty okay with that, actually. Small towns can be hella creepy. I don't like the fact that people could take one look at my face and immediately knew who my parents and grandparents were. No. Just no.

Anyway, in a post about trying to raise funds to light a giant evergreen in someone's yard for the holiday season, he posted today that instead of buying lights, they should tie "the witches" in town to the tree and set it on fire. Then he "helpfully" offered to name the various witches that were members of the group, the women who dared to point out what an asshat he was in the past. Then he offered to expand his helpfulness to include the warlocks (and American Legion and VFW members as well).

I got fed up.

I posted a call to the group Admin, asking why someone who just advocated setting fire to a group of people over a Christmas tree, someone who is suggestion murder - in jest or not - because people disagree with him, has not been banned from the group.

His reply? A link to the Wikipedia article on Trials. No commentary or context, just the Wiki link.

So I replied with "Are you trying to make a point, John? Or did you just copy the first link that popped up when you hit "I'm Feeling Lucky" on Google?".

I suspect this is going to be one of those Hitting Your Head Against a Brick Wall sort of things.

ETA: The Admin of the group just posted to say that it's not her responsibility to police the group and she's not going to limit what anyone says, including threats. All righty then, will be leaving that group, thanks.
