I waddled out to the mail box halfway down the block today, and on the way back to my half of the duplex I currently live in and noticed the front door of the other, supposedly vacant, half was wide open.

No truck in the drive to signify a workman had stopped by to prep the place for the next tenant.

Uh oh.

So I dragged Captain and my cell phone next door to investigate (like the good little Scooby Do watching child I used to be). He knocked on the door and shouted "Hello" in his big, mean, "I can kill you with my bare hands" voice that is totally at odds with his frame and which probably made his throat hurt - not that he'd ever admit it.

No answer.

I stood outside, cell clutched in my hand, fingers poised to dial 9-1-1 the second I heard anything weird, as Captain edged into the place to check it out. Moments later he appeared with the all clear, so we returned home and called the realtor to let them know someone had broken in next door.

Our very concerned realtor then says "I live an hour away, can you, like, tie the door shut or something until I can come look at it tomorrow?"

Sure. Fine. Whatever.

Captain went back out to secure the building with some dental floss (after we walked through the house one more time to make sure it was empty and also because I'd never been over there and I wanted to see how it stacked up to our half - they have nicer carpet and a working fireplace, damn them) and I, of course, hopped on-line to tell [livejournal.com profile] rewil.

Wow. Nice. You just gotta love the landlord mentality sometimes.

And I don't think anyone's done the definitive paper on dental floss as a security implement. You could get in on the ground floor of this.

Well, we're all about improvisation at the Captain and Miss Miah household. Plus, Perky did give Captain that book about MacGuyvering things for his birthday/Christmas this year.

Nice use of dental floss. 50 points to Slytherin for creativity.
