I've been out of the loop lately. DH's imminent departure is hitting me harder than I expected. I'm not sure which is worse, knowing that he'll be leaving or the wait. And there is that tiny chance that he won't lose the eight pounds and won't make weight again.
Anyway, to catch up:
There was a Pornography debate on campus on April 5th. DH and I (and Jane't and her DH) got to the main ballroom an hour early and the place was already filling up. By seven o'clock (when the debate was supposed to begin) the place was standing room only and people where being sent to down to Union Station for the closed circuit broadcast. Over 1600 people. Obviously they weren't expecting that big of a crowd (although why they didn't think bringing a porn legend to campus was going to bring every college age male on campus out of the wood work, I don't know).
I spent a good chunk of my college tenure as a volunteer for the Union Program Counsel (at least five years) on the same committee that sponsored the Porn Debate. And in my informed opinion, UPC has gone down the crapper in the few years since I've left. The debate started fifteen minutes late, with no word on why or how long the delay would be. There were no promotional hand outs - what happened to the days of "Herpes Alive: A unique petting zoo"? No carefully crafted with Texas Markers A-Frame posters. Very little publicity. All in all, I would have to rate the UPC involvement as Very Poor.
As for Mr. Jeremy and the other guy whose name has escaped me because, really, I didn't like him anyway, and Ms. Divine the moderator/supposed "feminist viewpoint"... The other guy (Michael something) is a recovering sex addict and founder of Bravehearts (an organization for, drum roll please, recovering sex addicts). His major points (as I saw them) seemed to be: A) Pornography is bad and it sustained his addiction, therefore ending his marriage. B) The Porn industry is one gigantic bad thing that corrupts minors. Parents should not be expected to monitor what their children see in movies and the Internet because then the children wouldn't like them. And C) Sex Addicts should only have sex with their spouse. As in one man and one woman. As in (according to this man) any other pairings would be considered deviant behavior. Both Mr. Other Guy and Ms. Divine (I'll get to her in a minute) kept issuing blanket statements about the porn industry and refused to listen to Mr. Jeremy's insistence that the Adult Film Industry he represents should not be held accountable for the pornography that is being produced and imported from overseas.
Ms. Divine was met by typical "college males who are about to met a porn idol" behavior. She assured us that she was actually the third debater and that she was going to represent the Feminist view. She also made several blanket statements about women that I personally found offensive and disagreed with. She insisted that some women did not have a choice other than turning to the porn industry and until women got equal pay, they wouldn't. Several female audience members pointed out that given the choice between struggling with Ramien and a job at BK or dancing at Mr. Jigglies, they would pick the Ramien... so, yeah, that would be a choice. Mr. Jeremy pointed out that successful women in the porn industry (and I'm sure you can name a few) actually make five times more than their male counterparts. Ms. D got increasingly belligerent, not only to the audience but also to Mr. Jeremy. She also insisted that people listen to the load of horse pooey being shoveled by The Other Guy and then turned around to talk to Mr. Jeremy during Other Guy's answers. Hello, Pot? It's Kettle.
And Mr. Jeremy? Fairly articulate and very intelligent man. He has a Masters in Special Education. Very polite. Knows his audience. Made several good points.
And... I got my picture taken with him. Hugsies. Go me! I only had to wait in line for an hour.
I was very saddened by Mr. Yankovic's loss and was incredibly surprised to discover that the concert on April 13th was going to go on as scheduled.
rewil, Jane't, DH and I had a blast. I ran into several people that I game with on Saturdays before the show. Our seats were really good, thanks to Jane't. We even saw several groups of Crazy Mennonites. Al seemed more confident with his show than when we saw him last year. "I Wanna Be Your Lover" is now a personal favorite of mine. "Hello, Mr. Tushy."
OMG - There's Invader Zim Porn on AFF! Jason?!!! Why didn't you warn me?
One last thing for the night... I haven't really written much lately, but I am working, I swear. And in tribute to K&J I promise to work the phrase "naked bondage Twister" into It's All Fun and Games Until...
Can't forget this.
