Captain and I have made some friends down here in the land of red dirt and cannibalistic prairie dogs (finally, only took two years) and they recently bought a house. Now I thought it would be a good idea to get them a nice little house warming present, but we didn't want to do something too... traditional. That's when Captain and I came up with the idea of the lawn gnome (reference our earlier search for a gnome a few posts before).

While I do tend to prefer to paint things with a hint of the weird, I can paint normal rosy cheeked, blond pretty gnomes. It is possible, I have done it before. (Christmas at the parents, extended family white elephant gift exchange the year after I spray painted a set of pink flamingos green and epoxied antenna to their heads to make alien flamingos. My mother ended up with that one. As a matter of fact, my mother ends up with a lot of my crafty white elephant gifts. Coincidence? Probably not.)

Anywho, this is really Captain's buddy from AIT and his spouse and I thought it would be best if Captain told me what he wanted it to look like since he would know the guy better. Right?

Captain wants an ebil gnome. Just. Like. The Last One.

Lucky for him I happened to have one final shovel gnome left. So now I'm painting gnome, only an hour or so a day after everyone has gone to bed and I have some time to myself, so it's slow going. But I've been taking pictures. I thought it might be interesting to see the progression from plain, innocent ceramic gnome to the scary bugger.

Junior here isn't anywhere close to being finished yet.

Oh, and the first gnome - the day 1 - is different then the rest because by the time I decided to take pictures every night I'd already primed the one I was going to work on. But the idea is the same.

Great pictures! It's so fun to see how it starts... He looks all sweet and happy.... and how it ends--quite evil! You're quite talented!! :-)

I lurves him.

He, on the other hand, just wants to eat my soul.

Relationships: this is why I can't have 'em.

Holy crap, that would scare any small child. (Must never show this picture to my kids...)

I'm not afraid of it. But then again I think monsters are funny so... Twisted "big" friends lead to twisted kids I guess.
