Yesterday marked the beginning of my sixth year of marriage to the Captain. We spent the early part of the day looking at houses - and found the perfect place - the latter half waiting to hear back from the loan person - where we found out that we can in fact get the loan for 100 percent financing and no down payment - and then the glow of impending house ownership disappeared when we sat down and really, truely thought things through.

Even without a down payment, and with the seller paying the closing costs, we're about five or so hundred short of the prepays we'd need right now. Another two weeks, maybe. Another few months, definitely. Another year, without a doubt. Right now? No way.

If we hadn't found the house, I wouldn't be quite so heartbroken.

However, after a phone call to my Mother, which I was pretty sure would end in her pointing out all the things that I wouldn't couldn't think of and convincing me it was a bad idea right now which is totally why I called her in the first place because I needed someone with a cluebat to point these things out, we decided it was a bad idea.

The monthly mortgage payment (while including taxes and insurance already) would be only $23 less than we're paying right now in rent, and soon we'll have to start making payments on Captain's student loans which will be even more of a budget drain. In a few months, we'll get a bonus, and then a signing bonus, and possibly even a pay raise if he manages to get things going on applying for OCS, but for now... we just don't have the immediate money saved.

The one good thing is I now know how much we can get a VA loan for, and have a better idea about what closing costs and prepays and things will be, so I know what we need to save before we try again.

Sadly, all the worry and nerves about the house made me sicker than I'd already been the last few weeks (yes, I have a doctor's appointment, but it's not for another 18 days and I scheduled it two weeks ago), and by the time we went to dinner at Kobe I was falling asleep and couldn't really eat. Still, dinner was wonderful, and Captain and I had a great time.

I gave him the newest Harry Dresden novel and the soundtrack to the first PotC movie (which was stole from our car during the accident in January, so this is the second time he's received it), and he surprised me with a whole bunch of scrapbook supplies. I'd dragged him to Hobby Lobby a few weeks ago in search of something specific for the wedding album, but spent a long time walking up and down the aisles browsing because I didn't want to have to come back in two days because I'd forgotten something, and nearly everything I'd pointed at wistfully that didn't cost an arm and a leg, and a few things I'd merely mentioned I wanting someday but didn't see, he found. The fact that he made note and went back to find things rather than just picking the "easy to find in case you can't come up with something else" item on my amazon list nearly made me teary.

Anywho, I now have my very own 12 inch metal ruler (since my other one has mysteriously disappeared, never to be seen again), and a dozen new decorative scissors, and TWO different sized corner rounders (TWO!), and a small light table, and a 1 inch square punch that is the size of my hand. I'm not kidding. The size of my HAND. (The package says it's a "whale of a punch.")

Then we came home and I stayed awake long enough to see about fifteen minutes of Man vs. Wild, which is a seriously messed up show on Discovery. So far I've seen that man drink the water out of fresh elephant poo (which made me sort of vomit in my mouth a bit), eat a snake raw, eat fish raw by just biting into them, eat an entire raven egg shell and all, and last night he peed on his shirt so he could wrap it around his head to keep cool. On camera.

So, all in all, even being sick, this was the best anniversary EVAH! The local Renfest starts today, and we're thinking about going with a few friends, which would totally go with the anniversary theme for us - Fifth Year: Pirates.

For now, while the house is still quiet, and the dog is snoring at my feet, I'm going to work on my wedding album scrapbook with all my new toys and read some of the gifts coming out on the [livejournal.com profile] sshg_exchange.
