Calling all Knitters on my Flist

I need some help.

I have a friend who wants a handmade hat with... well, remember twilleks from Star Wars with the head tail things? Something like that, only with three tails, and not so twillek-like. Does that make any sense?

Anyway, I'm a beginner as far as knitting and haven't even bought my first circular needle, although I'm aware that to make a hat I'm going to need one or a lot of DP needles. Or both.

I also need a pattern, and this is where I'm running into trouble. I can't find anything close, the best I've found is for a sort of stumpy jester hat look that I may be able to tweak to give me longer tails.

Any suggestions?

There might be a few patterns here you can adjust or tweak to fit the style you're looking for, Miah. It's usually where I go when I'm looking for a pattern. I'll keep looking around if this doesn't help. :)

This is more of a starting point, but you could do something like the Princess Leia Hat and just not coil up the bun parts (and I guess make an extra uncoiled bun). They don't look fat enough for what I think you have in mind, but you could always start with more stitches and then adjust the decreases.

Thing about this hat is that the tentacles aren't really part of the hat pattern, so attaching them as tentacles rather than buns could look funny....You could make the hat part and then instead of making the tubes separately, you could pick up the required number of stitches from the hat and start knitting them. That'd look fairly seamless, I think. Then the only trick is even placement.

Yes. Absolutely you will want DPs for a project like that. Otherwise you'll be doing LOTS of seams.
